Flash Media and the Obama-inauguration ; RTMP in Open Screen project
At the night of the presidential inauguration happening in the US, I’d like to share some information around the usage of Flash Media and an announcement around the “Open Screen Project”.
A huge number of media outlets used Flash Media to stream the coverage live on the web. The overview of media outlets can be found at on the Adobe site. The list includes Facebook, NY Times, CBS, CNN, UstreamTV and others.
Akamai, one of the major players in the CDN space, just released a press release. Quote from the document (via Yahoo.com): “Today also represented a single-day peak on the Akamai EdgePlatform for concurrent live streams utilizing Adobe Flash technology, serving over 800 Gbps of Flash streaming.”
Update: NewTeeVee has published a lot of stats around the stream usage with various outlets.
Update: Facebook / CNN numbers available
In related news, Kevin Lynch, Adobe CTO mentions that the specification for the RTMP protocol (on which Flash Video Streaming is based) will be made available as part of the “Open Screen Project”.
Kevin Lynch comments : “With the RTMP specification, developers and companies will be able to provide users with optimized audio, video and data streaming, no matter what kind of device the user is on or where the content is coming from. Our ongoing commitment to openness is accelerating adoption of the Flash Platform by developers and resulting in a new generation of Web applications, content and video experiences that run reliably across operating systems and devices.”
