Battlebots, Kiss, Rolling Stones and Contests, it’s JavaOne 2007!

What do Battlebots, Kiss and Rolling Stones have in common? Well, they will all be part of the JavaOne After Dark Bash on thursday May 10th, 2007 in Moscone, San Francisco. This information is coming directly from the source: Alvina O’Neal, JavaOne conference Manager (on SDN-TV).

JavaOne and “partner” events will be packed this year. Don’t miss (free) CommunityOne on Monday as well.

JavaOne == Contests ; This year, there will be no real live flying dukes. James Gosling said on this:

“We won’t be holding the t-shirt hurling contest at JavaOne this year. I should have done all of the prep and announcements a couple of months ago, but I was out sick and mostly unconscious. I’ve been back at work for a few weeks and it’s become clear that the time is too short and life is way too hectic for me to do it properly”.

But don’t be disappointed; John Wetherill, Kevin McDonnell and friends will filling this gap with the “Virtual Flying Dukes”:

“The “Flying Dukes” T-Shirt Throwing Contest has been a long-standing JavaOne tradition. This year we introduce a twist: instead of the physical contest where participants devise a means to launch t-shirts to the audience during the keynote, we are holding a virtual contest where partipants build a 3D avatar that must catch the shirt as it’s launched from the virtual stage.”

Last year, I played around with the Real-Time Challenge, in which you had to control a slot-car on a race track. It was a fun experience. This year, they decided to set it up again. shift the gear!

If you want to know more about these contests, there are also some sessions and labs available about these topics.
