The Ultimate NL-JUG event

Sometimes things come together and a wonderfull idea is born; Sun launching Project Blackbox, some holiday pictures and a blogpost from Mary. What could we do if we combine these?

Project Blackbox Scenario

Well, create the ultime NL-JUG event location; Let’s take the Queen Mary 2, which can hold over 2600 passengers. Take over 2000 Java enthousiasts, key speakers and equip the vessel with a “Blackbox”. The result is a huge conference venue, coding camp for Open source Java and discussion platform for example to discuss the Java SE Platform Roadmap.

With regards to the Roadmap, in my company we actually skip Java5 and switch to Java6 directly coming from J2SE 1.4. To my opinion, Java5 had some serious issues (regression bugs) in the earlier version which gave us a lot of trouble in our desktop application (sorry, Dutch only). So it’s very nice that J2SE 1.4 is supported for such a long period; let’s hope that the transition (including all our customer installations) is done somewhere next year…
